In an era, like ours, where many Catholics are “under-catechized and scripturally ignorant”, the major avenue to deepen the faith of the people is through the homily. The homily is meant to enrich the faith and spirituality of Catholics both theologically and liturgically. The understanding of the homily requires certain knowledge and methodology. The homiletic method therefore, helps the preacher to be guided and focused. The Theological Method of Lonergan provides the preacher with a method of proper retrieval, interpretation and communication in his homily.

Preachers ought to make a distinction between the time designated for homily in the liturgy and any other activity, program or need. It  will help the preacher on how to retrieve the content of preaching with better tools of interpretation and effective delivery of the message of salvation, which will dispose the assembly to encounter Christ who is about  to give Himself in the Eucharist after the homily. And when all this take their proper places the liturgy will become what and where everyone will be glad to be part of and no longer a reason for exodus of Catholics from the Church.
