ALL SOULS DAY, 2 NOVEMBER

Let us pray with today’s Gospel Reading (Matthew 25:31-46):

Merciful Father,

On this solemn celebration of All Souls’ Day, we come before Your throne of mercy with humble and grateful hearts, remembering all our departed loved ones. Though they are no longer physically present among us, our love for them remains, and our faith assures us that death is not the end but a passage towards eternity.

Lord Jesus, today, You speak of the final judgment, when the Son of Man will come in glory and separate the nations as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. You remind us that whatever we do for the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick, and those in prison, we do for You. This Gospel teaches us that love is the measure of our Christian lives and that every act of kindness offered to another is precious in Your sight.

Lord Jesus, as we remember our departed loved ones, we entrust their souls to Your infinite compassion. You alone know the depths of their hearts, their struggles, their sacrifices, their acts of charity, and the burdens they carried throughout their earthly journey. In Your mercy, forgive their sins, cleanse them of every imperfection, and grant them the grace of eternal rest. May those who are undergoing purification be purified by Your love and welcomed into the everlasting joy of heaven, where they will see You face to face.

Loving Father, we especially pray for our parents, grandparents, spouses, children, brothers, sisters, relatives, friends, benefactors, and all those who have touched our lives. We also remember those who died without anyone to mourn them, those who were forgotten, those who suffered painful deaths, and those whose names are known only to You. May Your perpetual light shine upon them, and may Your mercy embrace them all.

Lord, help us understand that remembering the dead must also inspire us to live more faithfully. Teach us to recognise Your face in the hungry, the poor, the homeless, the sick, the lonely, and the abandoned. May we not wait until tomorrow to show kindness, postpone forgiveness, or withhold love from those who need us today. Help us to serve others with generous hearts, knowing that whatever we do for the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for You.

Loving Father, comfort every family experiencing the pain of bereavement. Wipe away the tears of those who are grieving, strengthen those who struggle with the emptiness left by a loved one’s death, and give hope to those who find it difficult to accept their loss. Remind us that our departed loved ones are never beyond the reach of Your mercy and that our Christian hope rests in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
