Let us pray with today’s Gospel Reading (Matthew 5:17-37)

Lord Jesus, You did not come to abolish the Law but to bring it to fullness. You reveal that holiness is not mere outward observance, but a transformation of the heart. You teach us that anger can wound like murder, that lust can corrupt like adultery, that careless words and casual dishonesty fracture the truth that binds us to God and to one another.

Merciful Savior, how often we excuse these sins. We justify our anger as righteous, we dismiss impure thoughts as harmless, we soften our lies as necessary. Yet You show us that these hidden attitudes are deadly at their roots, seeds that grow into division, impurity, and spiritual death.

As we prepare to enter Lent, shine Your light into the hidden corners of our souls. Where resentment lingers, grant us reconciliation. Where desire is disordered, purify our hearts. Where our speech is careless or deceptive, place Your truth upon our lips.

O Holy Spirit, Spirit of Truth and Love, give us the courage to choose integrity over compromise, gentleness over anger, purity over selfish desire, clarity and honesty over manipulation. Teach us that the Christian life is not about minimal compliance, but about total fidelity, a wholehearted “yes” to the Father’s will. May our “Yes” mean yes, and our “No” mean no, flowing from hearts anchored in You.

Lord Jesus, do not allow us to settle for superficial goodness. Lead us to the fullness of righteousness that surpasses appearances and springs from love. As we approach the desert of Lent, strip away from us whatever is false, heal what is wounded, and strengthen what is weak, so that we may walk the path of life with undivided hearts. Amen
