Let us pray with today’s Gospel Reading (Matthew 16:21-27):

God Our Father,

We come before You with humble hearts, trusting in Your love and mercy. Today, Jesus reminds us that the path of discipleship is the way of the Cross: “If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”

Lord Jesus, teach us to follow You faithfully, even when the road is difficult. Give us the courage to embrace our daily crosses, not as meaningless burdens, but as opportunities to unite our lives with Your sacrifice. Free us from the desire for comfort, success, recognition, and worldly approval. Help us understand that “what profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” May we never gain the world at the cost of losing our souls. When we are discouraged, strengthen us. When we are tempted to give up, renew our faith. When suffering becomes heavy, remind us that You walk with us and that the Cross always points toward resurrection.

Lord, help us to deny ourselves not by rejecting the gift of life, but by placing Your will before our selfish desires. May we learn to love more generously, forgive more readily, serve more humbly, and give more freely. Bless our families, communities, priests, religious, and all who carry heavy crosses today. Give special strength to those who are suffering in silence and to those who feel that their burdens are too great to bear.

O Holy Spirit, renew our hearts so that we may not be guided by the values of a world that measures success by wealth, power, pleasure, and prestige. Teach us instead to value what lasts for eternity. May we never be ashamed of the Cross of Christ. Give us the grace to follow Jesus behind the Cross, through the Cross, and ultimately toward the glory of the Resurrection. Amen
